What is archival terminology?

Archival terminology is a flexible group of common words that have acquired specialized meanings for archivists. Since World War II, archivists worldwide have devoted considerable attention to the definition of these words. In 1964, an international lexicon of archival terminology was published.

What is a terminology record?

A written or printed work of a legal or official nature that may be used as evidence or proof; a document. ? 2. Data or information that has been fixed on some medium; that has content, context, and structure; and that is used as an extension of human memory or to demonstrate accountability.

What is the meaning of archival records?

n. Materials created or received by a person, family, or organization, public or private, in the conduct of their affairs that are preserved because of the enduring value contained in the information they contain or as evidence of the functions and responsibilities of their creator.

What are the five types of archives?

There are several types of archival repository but most repositories fall into the following categories:

  • Community archives.

What is the difference between archives and records?

An archives is the repository of the permanently valuable records of an organization. Such records are traditionally transferred to an archives, both physically and legally, when the organization that created them no longer needs them in the course of business.

What are examples of archives?

An example of an archive is a collection of old magazines. A place or collection containing records, documents, or other materials of historical interest. Old land deeds in the municipal archives. A place where public records, documents, etc.

What is a record with example?

The definition of a record is something on which sound or images has been preserved or a permanent file of something. An example of record is a collection on a CD of songs by The Beatles. An example of record is a list of crimes that a person has committed.

What are the 2 main archiving types?

There are two main types of archives: paper and digital. In a paper archive, documents are stored in the order they were created and in a digital archive they are stored in chronological order.

What are the functions of archives?

As institutions, archives tend to adhere to several core principles: acquisition, appraisal, arrangement & description, preservation, and access. These core archival functions are, in and of themselves, the subject of much study by archivists and archival scholars (see Archivaria; American Archivist).
